Deck Primer

I just love this damn Ambipom way too much. Probably the deck I've built the most, ever since it released in Standard, and now I'm doing my best to make it work in Expanded (specifically PTCGL's, though normal Expanded format doesn't provide too many other tools to this deck other than.. Trick Coin? *shrug*). The new Poké Pad item provides superb consistency to this deck, alongside Buddy-Buddy Poffin and Precious Trolley to allow for explosive starts.

Ambipom's main attack, Full Tilt Fling, will be fueled by Cherrim's Spring Bloom ability dumping tons of Grass Energy into it. If the opponent gets through Primate Dexterity, which protects Ambipom (forcing a coinflip on tails as Ambipom is attacked before damage is let through), we can recover using Rescue Carrier to get back our mons, or we can simply build another Ambipom, using Superior Energy Retrieval to reload. We use Victini's Victory Star ability to re-flip coins for the attack (thanks to this card being very easily searchable through Poffin), or we can use Glimwood Tangle to do that as well if necessary. We use Blunder Policy to turn Ambipom into a draw engine, since, let's not kid ourselves; we are DEFINITELY going to flip some tails.

The 3 different Aipoms are in there for good reason; PFL Aipom is just for the HP, SMP Aipom's Yank Out can be used to punish some decks for their draws in the late-game, and PGO Aipom is nice to have a coinflip option in the early game, mainly for use with Blunder Policy for some early draw or to try and keep it alive.

This deck runs some general Expanded goodies such as Guzma, Field Blower, and Chaotic Swell (mainly to prevent Team Rocket's Watchtower if one enters play). We also run Wondrous Labyrinth ◇, kind of a nice troll card that allows us to slow our opponent down quite a bit since our attack is so cheap, it doesn't really affect us. It forces the opponent to ping it with a stadium of their own to get back on track. We run Phione as a good gusting option if something bad is stuck in the active, or if we want something else of theirs on the bench more. Cleffa is ideal in the early-game to fix bad openings.

Some considerations of cards to run:

  • I did consider Meganium as an option for this deck, though being a Stage 2 makes this card quite slow. Even with Forest of Vitality as an option, I didn't really see this being ideal compared to our current engine of using Cherrim.
  • Survival Brace is a pretty disgusting tool that makes Ambipom need to be knocked out via two attacks (requiring at least 2 tails on its ability!) Especially considering you could use things like Lana's Fishing Rod to recycle the Brace, I would not count it out as an option. I personally did not go for this card since I like the consistency of Precious Trolley more, but it is absolutely worth considering as an option.
