Deck Primer

My personal deck of choice for Base-Fossil. In my opinion this deck can be considered one of the best decks in the format, but the pilot has to be knowledgeable about the matchups to unlock it's full potential. My personal deck of choice for Base-Fossil. In my opinion this deck can be considered one of the best decks in the format, but the pilot has to be knowledgeable about the matchups to unlock it's full potential. Mankey and Lass combine in this list to keep a close eye on your opponent's resources and deny them important topdecks. At some point in most games you will know everything your opponent has in hand and what they will draw, allowing you to carefully play around traps and predict their next turns based on the free information granted by Mankey's Peek.

Typical play patterns will look alot like this:

Early Game

Ideally you want to slow the tempo of the game in the early turns by tanking damage with Scyther or with the use of Magmar's Smokescreen. This will often prove necessary so you can set up your hand and bench for a Wigglytuff + Lass sweep. Use Mankey to identify your most important prize cards, and more specifically: a Professor Oak. While you do this, get a Jigglypuff loaded up with a Fire Energy and a Wigglytuff in hand. Because Super Energy Removal can be so devistating to this deck in the early game, avoid playing your Double Colorless Energy without knowledge that your opponent can't remove it. You just want to wait for the right time to strike, evolve, drop the DCE on Wigglytuff, Lass (or oak into Lass) your opponent, and start watching the top card of their deck with Mankey so you have perfect information about their hand. The information gained by Mankey in this deck is extremely valuable, and what you do with that information will determine the success of the game.

Mid game

Once you have a Wigglytuff taking out their Pokemon, stack the energy on it higher than you need to. This ensures a single Super Energy Removal off the top of their deck that you can't prevent will not result in losing a turn of damage. It is inevitable your opponent will eventually draw removal, so you need to set the game up in such a way that even if they topdeck an answer: it doesn't save them. If you spot a threat like Hitmonchan, it may be best to begin building another Wigglytuff instead of investing too heavily into the first one you set up. Use Magmar to tank and soften up an enemy hitmonchan, so Wigglytuff can come in for the KO. Use the information from Mankey to map out your opponent's plays; staying one step ahead of them, and check on any undiscovered prize cards you have when advantageous.

Late Game

If your opponent manages to stump your first or second attempt to sweep them, don't worry! This deck is capable of utilizing Double Colorless Energies and Lass to catch your opponent off guard again and again, all the while manipulating the top of their deck and gaining free information about what resources they have available to try to wriggle out of a loss. Plus, with 3 Lass and 3 item finders in the deck, it has great potential to keep from decking out when libraries are getting low on cards.

Plan your turns carefully and don't be too greedy. Sometimes it is best to wait for the cards to fall in line, and not force plays by dumping and drawing new hands. There are only 15 energy and 2 Energy Retrievals in this list, so discard them sparingly. You will find yourself using 100% of your brain to count cards, check discard piles, and use Mankey to calculate or predict upcoming plays.

It does not take much to learn how to play this deck, afterall it is just a Do The Wave deck, but the ceiling is quite a bit higher for this list since it requires intimate knowledge of the format to unlock it's full potential. Give it a try, it does really well against Lickitung/Stall in the hands of an experienced pilot!

I have had a lot of fun with a build similar to this but with dodrio instead of scyther. Mankey is quickly becoming one of my favourite cards!
