This is interesting! I think there are attackers like Drudiggon that still do more damage.
WafflzInTheHouse I appreciate it. I have been running a double greninja with drud and giratina + rocky helmets in tcgp, and I wanted to make a full deck with him!
You seem like someone who genuinely wants to improve, but you did say that you don't play online. If you'd like, I can give you a few pointers on how to improve your deckbuilding skills for either Standard or Expanded.
CountyGibbon798 I would love some feedback on deckbuilding! I don't actively play competitively right now, but I would like to start with standard format, as expanded can get a little tough to wrap my head around. I made a Sneasler V deck with Arbok and Tapu Koko last night that's in Standard, but to me it still looks kinda messy, and I wanna clean it up a little before purchasing.
Good choice to start with Standard, as it's generally easier to memorize interaction between the newer cards and sets. My go-to advice is to look at LimitlessTCG and see what decks are performing well, and try to notice patterns. It'll become apparent pretty quickly which cards are the mainstays (Boss's Orders, Iono, Arven etc.) and it will help your judgement when buiding your own decks.
For some extra general advice, stay away from setup attackers for the most part, and don't overrely on stage 2 lines, as your Rare Candy supply is limited, and it's usually too slow to evolve them the traditional way. Be wary of tech cards (cards that serve a singular purpose for correcting a specific matchup, have a "when played" effect, etc.) and don't run too many of them to minimize your chances of starting with one and not an actually vital part of your strategy.
Learn card "pathways," how one card can get you another card, which can get you another, and so on. For example, Ultra Ball can get you Lumineon V, which can get you Arven, which can get you an item and tool. With that, you can visualize Ultra Ball as the pathway to any other item or tool you may need at a moment. Healing overall is pretty bad right now since we're in a meta that tries to OHKO everything, and rotation is coming in a few weeks, so all cards with an F marker or fewer will be rotated out of the Standard format. In simpler terms, this one marks the point where all yellow-border cards won't be allowed in Standard, unless there exists a Standard version of one of those cards (for example, since there is a G-regulated Counter Catcher, you're allowed to use the SM one from 2017).
Hope this helps!
CountyGibbon798 thank you so much for the advice, especially looking at pathways towards getting specific cards you want. Does the meta change much when the format changes? I am not a huge fan of OHKO playstyles, so I'm hoping that's not quite necessary in order to play at an amatuer level. I hope I can start making some pretty interesting decks with this advice, thanks again!
Between formats, yes; the meta changes a lot. In Standard, changes really only occur depending on how strong the next set coming out is.
And as if Pokemon wanted to make me look like a total idiot for saying that healing sucks, they JUST announced the new Arven's Pokemon archetype that has a really good healing card associated with it lol. And don't worry. If you're not playing at the highest level, yoou can afford running decks that don't need to OHKO everything. However, if you want to play passivley and competitively, I'd take a look at some control lists out there.
