Deck Primer

The goal of this deck is to trap an opponents pokemon in the active in an unfavorable matchup against hydreigon. This is the first deck I've made so fair warning it's probably not good but I like hydreigon and tried to build something decent around him. I'll try and explain the reason I chose each card in the deck since it's hard to find a good explanation online for a hydreigon deck. 4x Deino: Obviously need it for Hydreigon, I'm using the one with 70 hp instead of the better one with 80 hp to

4x Deino: Obviously need it for Hydreigon, I'm using the one with 70 hp instead of the better one with 80 hp to keep it tutorable with Buddy-Buddy Poffin. 3x Zweilous: The stage 1 pokemon for Hydreigon. It's Find a Friend attack is very useful to find any 2 pokemon you need, usually Hydreigon and a relevant supporter or 2 supporters. Zweilous seems to be the hardest pokemon to tutor since it can't be found by nest ball, call for family, or buddy-buddy poffin but this will be addressed later. 3x Hydreigon: The main attacker. With it's ability to take an extra prize card upon defeating an opponent's basic it seems to thrive in killing supporters and with it's attack denying the opponent's pokemon a retreat it ensures a 2nd hit as long as they don't switch. The main difficulty with Hydreigon is its 5 energy cost for its attack, but I've put plenty of energy acceleration in here to deal with that. 1x Fezandipiti: Just good all-around support with its card draw ability. 2x Mega Audino: This pokemon is mostly here energy acceleration with its first attack, having the potential to tutor and attach 6 energy. In a pinch it can use it's 2nd attack for damage but if you're using that then something has gone horribly wrong. 2x Toxel: The basic pokemon that evolves into Toxtricity. Toxel's Call for Family attack is a pretty good tutor, grabbing any 2 basic pokemon and putting them on the bench. It's legal targets are Deino, Fezandipiti, Mega Audino, Darkrai, and another Toxel. 2x Toxtricity: Only here for it's energy tutor and accelerator ability. 1x Darkrai: This guy is here because he was sitting on my desk and I wanted to find a home for him. He's not really great but I think the scenario he performs best in is when he is in the active and you have toxtricity putting energy on your Hydreigon line. Getting up to 5 energy is gonna take a while and so stalling your opponent with Darkrai's attack that put's their pokemon to sleep could be useful. 2x Buddy-Buddy Poffin: Tutors out both Deino and Toxel. 3x Nest Ball: Tutors out any basic, more versatile than poffin but somewhat limited in it's effect since it can only grab one. More than likely it will be the bigger basics like Mega Audino or Fezandipiti. 1x Prime catcher: I definitely don't know if this is the best ace spec card for this deck but I like the idea of grabbing their supporters off the bench and wrecking havoc with Hydreigon so that's why I chose it. 3x Rare Candy: Here to hopefully skip zweilous. 2x Switch: Some of these pokemon have some pretty high retreat costs and so I'd like to avoid discarding energy, although there is a lot of accelereation so it's not the end of the world if you do have to. 4x Ultra Ball: Grabs any pokemon. Very self-explanatory, great tutor. 2x TM Evolution: One of the ways of finding Zweilous. Deino doesn't have an attack worth using so being able to use this instead is great. 1x TM Turbo Energize: Same concept as the last TM, this one being used for energy acceleration. 3x Arven: Arven is a great supporter, he can find any item card which provides a lot of flexibility on top of finding a tool as well. Currently the only tools are the TMs but you can add another tool if need be. 4x Boss's Orders: Used to pull benched pokemon to the active so they can be sniped by Hydreigon, very useful. 2x Janine's Secret Art: More energy acceleration. 3x Professor's Research: Just good generic card draw. 12x Basic Dark Energy: I wanted to put a decent amount of energy in here to make sure I had enough to meet the high demands for this deck. There are probably some better special energies to throw in but I really don't care to optimize it that much, but feel free to if you'd like to. I hope this helps.
