I realize you are trying to go for ease of use for a new player, so my suggestion(s) may be ignorable.
Personally, I prefer the Dragon Applin (Twilight Masquerade 126) in my Hydrapple deck. I find its find friend ability to be more benificial than just 20 damage. It allows you to draw any pokemon from your deck, allowing you to pull an evolution for next turn, or a Teal mask to improve card draw. If you are anticipating a knockout, you can preemptively pull Fezandipity to be ready to draw 3 cards.
The only down side is you are unable to pull it from a Bug Catching Set, but I find that is not a problem with buddy buddy poffin, and nest balls.
Mycelium, Your absolutely right, it is better and you cant get it from but catching set thats 1 of the reasons i dont run it, but it isnt noob friendly on purpose i just like the fast consistent or smooth playstyle but thats a good recommendation maybe to have as a 1 of in the deck.
usually it can be a good idea to have mostly or all basics from evo lines that r best in terms of hp or bc of cards like bug catching set and maybe 1 basic that prioritizes the attack incase you have the oppportunity for it and youll see that in some decks.
me personally i dont like to rely on basic pokemons attacks from evo lines at all unless its meant for it like cleffa or budew, and yes u can grab fez and draw 3 if it dies but id rlly rather have my applins alive and turn into hydrapples and focus on hydrapples attack and yes they could get boss ko anyway or ko by pult but more often that not they wont and id rather not start applin bc of it unless i have candy hydrapple, and seeing as that i dont wanna be starting with/attacking with applin, and I do typically wanna choose first bc its an evo deck and i cant attack going first, I wouldnt wanna use the dragon applin.
but it is a good suggestion and u or anyone else could try it
