Side note, you could add a way to bring item cards back into your deck/hand from discard pile. Maybe Darkrai VSTAR or there's this one floatzel card that has an attack like that for one water. There aren't too many ways to get items back though so I get it if you don't want to. 😅
You could also try energy lock cards. Ones that don't let your opponent play energy from their hand.
