XY–Sun & Moon Nov 2013–Feb 2020 Coin winner chooses the starting player; first player draws and uses Supporters but cannot attack. Sword & Shield–modern Feb 2020–now Default Current rules: first player draws, but cannot use a Supporter or attack on turn one.
