Marnie's Grimmsnarl ex / Froslass (+ Umbreon ex) — Play Guide

The goal (win condition)

You are a Darkness damage-spread / disruption deck. You don't one-shot things — you stack damage from three sources and convert it into efficient knockouts with a cheap 2-prize attacker:

  1. Froslass (Freezing Shroud) — passively drops 1 damage counter on every Ability Pokémon (both sides) each turn. The meta is full of Ability Pokémon, so this is free, automatic chip on their board.

  2. Marnie's Grimmsnarl ex (Shadow Bullet) — 180 to the Active + 30 to a Benched Pokémon, powered for free by its Punk Up ability (loads up to 5 Darkness on evolution).
  3. Munkidori (Adrena-Brain) — relocates up to 30 damage onto the opponent to land the exact knockout or snipe a benched threat.

Add Boss's Orders to drag the card you want to KO into the Active, and Umbreon ex as a Confusing Tera wall for grindy turns. Because Grimmsnarl only gives up 2 prizes, your trades are efficient. You win by softening their whole board with chip, then cashing it into KOs faster than they can answer.

Mulligan / keep

Keep any hand with a Basic + a way to start the Grimmsnarl line (Marnie's Impidimp, or Buddy-Buddy Poffin / Ultra Ball / Spikemuth Gym to find it), ideally with Rare Candy or a draw Supporter. ~26% mulligan (10 Basics).

Sequencing — the golden rule

Search/draw first, commit Energy and retreat last. Specific order each turn:

  1. Spikemuth Gym first — it's free and once per turn: search out the Marnie's Pokémon you need (Impidimp or Grimmsnarl ex). Do this early so you know your line.
  2. Item search — Buddy-Buddy Poffin (Impidimp / Snorunt / Eevee, all ≤70 HP), Ultra Ball for anything, Pokégear to find a Supporter.
  3. Evolve to fire Punk UpRare Candy an Impidimp straight into Grimmsnarl ex. Punk Up then searches Darkness Energy onto it. Only grab the 2 you need for Shadow Bullet — leaving the rest in the deck so you can hand-attach to Munkidori/Umbreon later. Also evolve Snorunt → Froslass to start the passive chip.
  4. Supporter for the turn: Boss's Orders when you can take a knockout (gust the target), or Lillie's Determination to refresh a low/clogged hand (it draws 8 if you still have all 6 prizes — strongest turns 1–2; play out what you want to keep first, since it shuffles your hand away).
  5. Attack: Shadow Bullet (180 + 30 to a Bench target — aim the 30 to set up a future KO or stack with Froslass chip).
  6. Munkidori (Adrena-Brain) after attacking — move 30 to finish the KO or snipe. (Munkidori needs a Darkness Energy on it; that's a hand-attach.)
  7. Attach Energy / retreat LAST. Use a Switch rather than paying retreat.
  8. Between turns: Froslass auto-chips every Ability Pokémon at Pokémon Checkup.

The core combo (your "goal sequence")

Froslass chip (10/turn to each Ability mon) + Shadow Bullet (180 + 30 bench) + Munkidori (move 30) lets you take knockouts that look impossible — e.g., grind a 320 HP Dragapult ex down over a turn, then Boss's + Shadow Bullet + a Munkidori bump to finish. Map it backwards: "how much chip do I need so my next Shadow Bullet is lethal?"

Watch-outs

  • Froslass damages YOUR Ability Pokémon too — Grimmsnarl ex and Munkidori each take 1 counter per checkup. (Your Impidimp/Snorunt/Eevee/Umbreon ex have no Ability, so they're safe.) Use Munkidori to move counters off your own board when needed, and don't let a Grimmsnarl sit at low HP into a KO.
  • Prize map: don't over-bench ex Pokémon (Grimmsnarl ex, Umbreon ex, Munkidori-is-1 prize) the opponent can Boss's up for easy prizes.

Umbreon ex's role here

A flex Tera wall + Confusion attacker you power by hand (Punk Up can't fuel it — it only feeds Marnie's Pokémon). Bring it up when you need to stall a turn or attack into a matchup where Confusion buys time; otherwise leave it benched (safe from your own Froslass). Don't force it — it's a tech, not the plan.

Tempo expectations

Ideal curve: T1 set up Impidimp + Snorunt + support; T2 Rare Candy → Grimmsnarl ex, Punk Up, Shadow Bullet; Froslass online T2–3 for ongoing chip. From there you grind.
