Yet Another Slowking

Slowking is one of the most interesting decks right now because there are so many ways to play it. I created this version as a riff on a number of different lists I've seen, and have been enjoying it. I'm not going to pretend like it's the best, most definitive list (as I surely will continue to change it up), but Slowking is a strong archetype and this list has done pretty well.

I created this version as a riff on a number of different lists I've seen, and have been enjoying it. I'm not going to pretend like it's the best, most definitive list (as I surely will continue to change it up), but Slowking is a strong archetype and this list has done pretty well.

Notes:

• Shaymin is a tough matchup for Slowking. A lot of decks run Spectrier to take it out, but it's really easy for your opponent to simply scoop Shaymin right back up with a Night Stretcher next turn. Shaymin gets the most play these days in Festival Lead, so I've used Cofagrigus to circumvent Shaymin and spread counters around. For a full KO, it does require 2 Cofagrigus attacks (i.e. some discard recovery to attack back-to-back), but it can work.
• I like Zoroark because it's unexpected and can lead to some serious outplay potential. It's probably not the best card but honestly I just think it's fun. Don't sleep on Mind Jack into an Area Zero Underdepths matchup, either.
• Boomerang Energy is hotly debated, and while I do think it can be handy, most of your opponents are going to trade your Slowking after you get an attack off. Wondrous Patch gets more value in most cases.
• I am not 100% confident in Prime Catcher as my ACE SPEC pick. A lot of decks use Kieran or Surfer or just a plain ol' Switch, and run a Boss's Orders instead. However, they usually are also running Secret Box, which is also a pretty good choice. Personally I feel like without dedicated search (Petrel) to get it early, Secret Box can be a dead end, especially for a deck that has a lot of discard mechanics it already wants to mitigate. Unfair Stamp may be a good swap, which would eliminate the need for the Special Red Card as well.
• A lot of people use Brave Bangle, but I find Annihilape more consistent since there are a lot of cards in the meta beyond the 330 HP (Brave Bangle + Metagross) threshold. Most of the time you're trading prizes 3-1, and Lillie's Clefairy eliminates the need for a Bangle against Dragapult.
• I've seen some decks with Gumshoos instead of relying on Academy at Night, but if you're playing with the Mega Kanghaskhan engine the bench space is pretty limited.
